How Do I know When to Replace My HVAC System?

A 30ish man wearing a green sweater and wondering when he should replace his HVAC system

Let's suppose your HVAC system is working okay, but not great. Or perhaps it's getting old and you're wondering how much life it has left in it. Maybe you'd like reduce your monthly utility bills with a more energy-efficient system. If any of those scenarios sound familiar to you, then you may be wondering, "How do I know when to replace my HVAC system?"

If you answer yes to any of the following, it may be about that time.

  • Is your HVAC unit more than 10 years old?
  • Does your HVAC unit need frequent repairs?
  • Are your utility bills continuing to go up?
  • Are some rooms in your home too hot while others are too cold?
  • Do you not have a programmable thermostat, so you constantly have to adjust it manually?
  • Is your home too humid?
  • Does your home always seem dusty?
  • Is your HVAC system noisy?

While repairs on malfunctioning equipment like the motor or compressor may be possible, they won’t be cheap, and the more cost-effective solution might be to replace your system.

All or Nothing?

If you’re replacing your HVAC equipment, one of the options could be to replace only part of the system, such as the outdoor or the indoor unit. While that would save you a few dollars up front, it might not be the best choice for the long term. You want to be sure that all the parts of your HVAC system work together properly.

Mismatched HVAC Can Cost You Money

A mismatched system is more likely to have service problems later. It also won’t be as energy efficient as a totally new system. The ductwork may not be the right size for your new system. And finally, the replaced parts might not come with a warranty if they’re to be used with an existing system. Don’t fix your vampire; drive a stake through it!

Choosing the Right HVAC System

Every location is different. HVAC systems should be chosen based on the unique characteristics of your home. Select a unit that’s too small and it won’t be able to keep up when the temperatures soar. Select one that’s too big and you’ll not only spend more, you’ll also have difficulty controlling the temperature and humidity in your home.

A professional HVAC contractor can perform a load calculation to determine the capacity needed and the correct distribution of air to each room.

Expect These Great Benefits

Changing to a new HVAC system has a significant upside. The new system is likely to be much more efficient, saving you dollars on your monthly utility bills. It’s also likely to be more effective, cooling your home more quickly and quietly, especially when temperatures are extreme.

Your new system may even have some of today’s innovative comfort features such as two-stage compressors, variable speed fans, programmable thermostats, and automatic temperature/humidity controls. The end result will be a reliable system that consistently performs well, providing comfort, peace of mind, and extra money to spend on something more fun than utility bills.

How to Select an HVAC Contractor

When you’re ready to replace your HVAC system, you’ll want to find an HVAC company you can trust. Since they’ll determine the type of system you need and will install it, you’ll want to work with people who are knowledgeable and can explain your options.

Inquire about the contractor’s license, national-association memberships such as the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America), and certification of its technicians by NATE (North American Technician Excellence). The contractor should also have proof of adequate insurance.

Obtain two or three written estimates for the work. The contractors should come to your home and do full inspections before providing their recommendations and pricing. They should also be able to give you some ballpark numbers as to the cost of operating the system. Finally, they should give you a timeline for when the work can be done.

When looking at prices, be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. You don’t want to end up with an undersized system that you chose because it was the least expensive option.

Going to use them for everything I can now including my HVAC maintenance. Replaced my sewer line for a great price. Camera'd my line for free and gave me a truly free estimate whether I used them or not. Job ended up being tougher than what was expected and not once did they bring up the possibility of changing from what they quoted me. Good group of guys right there. Chris and his crew know what they're doing.

As I commented on both Facebook and Angie's List this was a good experience. The service was performed as scheduled and well. There was a glitch in the billing, but your own people detected it and contacted me about it and took care of it on your own initiative. Greatly appreciated!
